One thing we hear often from business owners is, “I feel busy, but I am not sure if my business is actually doing well financially.” We have worked with many clients who were bringing in sales but still felt unsure about their financial position. Once we walked through a few key numbers together and put simple systems in place, they finally had clarity on where they stood and what needed to improve.

Here are 8 practical ways to determine whether your business is doing well financially, along with what you can do about it.

  • You are consistently profitable. Look at your monthly profit and loss report. If you are not profitable, review your pricing and identify expenses you can reduce.
  • You have enough cash to cover expenses. Check your bank balance weekly and compare it to upcoming bills. If it feels tight, start setting aside a percentage of income each time you get paid.
  • You are paying yourself regularly. Set a fixed amount or percentage to pay yourself each month instead of waiting to see what is left over.
  • Your revenue is steady or growing. Review your monthly sales trends. If income is inconsistent, focus on improving your marketing or client retention.
  • Your expenses are under control. Go through your expenses line by line. Cancel unused subscriptions and review areas where spending has increased.
  • You are not relying on debt to operate. If you are using credit cards to cover regular expenses, create a simple plan to reduce reliance by cutting costs or increasing cash flow.
  • Your books are accurate and up to date. Make sure your accounts are reconciled monthly so your numbers match your bank and you can trust your reports.
  • You understand your numbers. Set aside time each month to review your reports. Focus on a few key numbers like profit, expenses, and cash balance instead of trying to understand everything at once

If you are unsure where your business stands financially, that is completely normal. The goal is to create simple habits and systems so your numbers become clear and easy to manage.
